So, with the way this magazine site gets quiet, coupled with my love for WatchMojo videos, a little idea came to mind after watching one of such videos…
What would you consider to be the top 10 most memorable episodes on the State?
So I did some little introspection, going through the entire post list on the State…
… and here is the list I came up with. Out of 347 various episodes on the State so far, these are the ones I can pinpoint as episodes that are 10 of the best-written and most memorable episodes of the State of Dabar.
In my opinion, at least.
Do bear this in mind, though: this is only as of 19th June 2023. A new one will be done probably next year or so, and it’s most definitely not gonna be the same. Well, that one’s gonna be top 20, for one, and with the stories upcoming, the list definitely won’t stay the same. So let’s enjoy this one, okay?
Great, let’s get into it!
10 – That Last Fight (Long Journey)
The starter to this classic M & D series was always one I held in high esteem. It kicks off in a fiery fashion, and it doesn’t take very long for one to realize how bad things are between the two people we’re introduced to.
The exchange gets heated in no time flat, and we can all tell what this is all about. This a classic case of a young man getting his girlfriend pregnant and wanting her to abort it, and she resisting the demand vehemently. The tension hits you straight away, and you’re either hoping Evelyn doesn’t fold, or Chris gets his way.
Dunno why you’d want the latter option, but yeah, people have different ideas, so…
And sure, the title of the episode includes ‘last fight’, but did you envisage that ending?
The young man definitely had something up his sleeve, but I doubt anyone could guess it included running away from Accra and leaving poor, pregnant Evelyn to her fate.
This sets the story up nicely for how it goes, and the little cycle Chris went around. I personally enjoy it every time I go back to it.
9 – They Were Shaken Up (Meet The Dolphynes)
The first of 3 entries from the legendary series, this one gets its memorable bit from one major part of the story.
That moment Daniel warns the idiotic Desert Eagle to leave Diamond alone.
As far as the Adamtey-Aniyah plot goes, yes, we know that this episode pretty much kickstarts the beginning of a very ugly relationship dynamic between them, which makes it a pretty critical point of their storyline. But after Daniel made his intentions clear at the end of the previous episode regarding the young idiot, we’re just itching to know what’s gonna happen to that infantile fool.
And we find out, and boy, do we love it! Daniel shakes him up nicely and gives him a good, good warning.
“Because the next time you harass my daughter in any way, by the time I’m through with you, your body will forget what it’s like to be supported by a skeleton. Oh yes, if you come after my daughter again, I will find you, grind your bones into powder, mix it all up in your bloodstream and sing ‘Oh Happy Day’ while doing it. Because nobody touches my daughter and gets away with it.”
Yeah, this quote definitely goes down in the annals of Statelore as a classic. And we love the iconic Dolphyne patriarch for it. He deserves his flowers over and over again for that.
8 – It’s You I Want (Start Over)
Daniel’s warning to young, dumb Archibald isn’t the only standout quote earning its parent episode a place on this list. Step forward Marcus, the sweet Zambian babe’s boyfriend.
After 18 months away from each other, following the drama that ensued throughout the story, with Allison’s reemergence and all, this episode is memorable for the words spoken by Marcus to Temwani once they finally met again.
My, that was a love speech for the ages! Simply beautiful.
Those glorious assurances to Temwani that she’s the only one he wants to be with, and how he desires to spend the rest of his life with her, is such a fitting and beautiful end to a story that pretty much at a point had us frustrated with Marcus when his indecisiveness popped up. The story ends with us all satisfied that he’s finally made a decision and stuck to it.
And we couldn’t be happier with that. It definitely is one of the best finales on the State.
7 – You’re Gonna Learn Today (Clementine)
From the moment Clementine begins, we’re made aware that she’s not your regular kind of girl, considering her very disturbing background. And in the first episode, where she’s ready to let Akwesi in, her caution to him before they get busy is pretty… unsettling, to say the least.
This episode, though, lives up to its name and lets us learn one thing.
Clementine is an absolute psychopath.
Trust me, only a psycho would ever think of turning her man’s house upside down like that, only because she saw him chatting with a female colleague. And it wasn’t just a matter of breaking glass or tearing down curtains; you can tell serious, calculated effort went into doing all that madness. That was downright insanity at its finest.
What makes her scarier is when she breaks the initial ‘ignorance’ act and makes Akwesi know just how much of him she demands. It’s creepy.
The guy might as well never step out of the house ever again, with the kind of expectations she has.
What’s even more disturbing, however? How she got him back into her panties. Locking him in the men’s room and getting him to eat her out, with all those sweet words and irresistible charm was frightening. It’s at that point that you know Akwesi is a dead man walking, and that it’s gonna take a whole lot to break free from this crazy, deranged woman.
Unfortunately, as much as he tried, he didn’t escape. Poor guy…
6 – My Life Is Messed Up (Meet The Dolphynes)
Back to MTD (if I didn’t exercise restraint, half of the episodes could’ve been from MTD alone. Trust me). And yes, this is a brutal episode. Whatever you imagined this would have been was definitely not how it panned out.
When Aniyah requests to see Larissa, you know she’s got the idea to tell the woman the late Adamtey had plans of moving to her and sleeping with her. Instead, it turned into a sorrowful tale of her life story, down to the horrifying moment Adamtey violated her.
And boy, what a painful tale it is. From being taken advantage of by a trusted family member to the horrid events of ‘Violare’, Aniyah becomes a sympathetic character we all feel sorry for.
And if that’s not enough, the breakdown follows.
A difficult breakdown. A breakdown so cutting, Larissa is still in tears long after the meeting.
That was a tough one. And definitely a memorable one.
5 – Family Blessings (MTD: Wedding Bells)
Yeah, more of the Dolphynes here.
If there’s one thing every fan of MTD knows, it’s that this family is a tight-knit one. They’re always there for each other, and the love runs deep.
In this special spinoff, that reality couldn’t be more apparent than in this episode, where the bride-to-be gets blessed by both siblings and parents.
The little presentation from the rest of the siblings is a really sweet and thoughtful gesture, and it’s obvious how happy they all are for their big sister. The major emotional punch, though, is in her meeting with her parents.
Our beloved patriarch Daniel gets emotional, realizing his baby is now about to be a woman. And I dunno about you, but that bit about Larissa breaking that generational curse on her family with her marriage is powerful to me. She might have witnessed a lot of divorces and separations in her time, but thanks to breaking that curse with her successful marriage, her children hopefully won’t be subjected to that. It’s powerful.
And the prayer from Daniel! Good Lord, that is one prayer every child would love to receive from their father. It’s just magnificent. Utterly magnificent.
MTD: Wedding Bells is one series with nothing but good vibes, and this episode encapsulates that through and through.
4 – UE 1 (Options n Upshots)
From a very happy episode to a very sad one. Ugh! Sorry, y’all.
After that stunning end to season 1, where Thomas and Glori perish in that ghastly car accident, one of the questions you most definitely ask yourself is… how is Leticia gonna feel about all this?
Well, this one answers that question. In the most intense way possible.
We find Leticia in an absolute fix, as she’s discovered the whole truth and is struggling to process it all. Her husband is dead, along with her housekeeper. They were having an affair. Her husband actually disliked her after a fight they once had.
This is so much to process, and we see her sway from thought to thought, trying so hard to understand it all. Trying to figure out why, what and how.
And coming to the realization that she’s not gonna get the answers she needs, with the two of them no more.
And then… she snaps.
Aniyah’s breakdown on MTD is a tough one to digest, but Leticia’s… boy oh boy.
The anger is so palpable, and if not for her mother, you wouldn’t be too shocked if she ended up burning down the house. Intense is a small word to describe her reaction. The pain, the confusion, the frustration, the agony… it’s all pent up in Leticia, and it explodes in this episode.
The utterly solemn and grave intensity of this episode is not only magnificently crafted, it sets the tone for what is one of the darkest seasons on the State, and lifts the story ‘Options n Upshots’ from being a nice story to one of SoD’s very finest.
3 – Pussy Interrogation (Power Couple)
Oh my, did Kay shock us with this one!
If there’s one thing you know by now when it comes to Kay Parker’s tales, it’s that they overstep boundaries and go pretty raw with it. You might have thought ‘Sin Beneath The Cross’ was a mad one, with the Benton couple actually fornicating on the altar of his father’s church (that’s a level of debauchery I’m yet to fully understand, people).
This 9th episode of the first season, though? That made that one look very child-friendly.
In Carol’s quest to gain information from a naked and horny Stella as to why there’s a target on Kane Glazer’s back, she uses a very unconventional method.
Excite the hungry Stella by touching her in the right places and threatening to leave her hanging halfway if she doesn’t speak.
Does it work? Yep. But one thing is for sure, it’s so well written, you won’t easily get the images out of your head. And the images it’ll leave in your head… the less said, the better, to be honest.
In a parallel setting, their partners are also enjoying themselves passionately in some hotel room. Absolute craziness, isn’t it?
Power Couple may have a lot of tension and drama, due to the world the characters live in, but it doesn’t hold back on the kind of lewd lives they live, and how they satisfy those carnal desires they have. They’ll obviously do it in the most insane ways possible, and this jaw-dropping episode is just a way of showing that.
2 – Wednesday Evening (You’re Gonna Regret This)
One of the most ridiculously crafted episodes you’ll ever find on the State!
Ambradu and his girlfriend Stephanie are supposed to use her dad’s absence to have a good time on her couch. Considering the weird little happenings that were going on after the Slash Kings’ encounter with the weird boy, you knew something strange would probably occur.
Would you have guessed that a cockroach invasion would be the strange occurrence, though? Not in a million years.
From the strange hallucination of seeing cockroaches all over her body, right down to the moment the yucky little army emerges from the kitchen, it’s madness throughout! It builds up slowly but surely, for the moment when Ambradu’s worst nightmare comes to light. And the horny young man has no other option but to speed back home in absolute terror.
This episode, aside from its crazy nature, also marks a major turning point in Ambradu’s life. It is at this point that the seeds of his redemption arc are planted, so in hindsight, he should be very grateful for it. Without it, he probably would have had no motivation to change his life, and who knows? He could well have ended up dead like his best friend…
1 – The Good, The Bad & The Indecisive (Meet The Dolphynes)
Yeah, this episode, which brought season 2 of MTD to an end, is definitely a top, top episode. And what an ending it brought our way!
On lower levels, it’s fair to say that the love thing between Edem and Diamond really started from here. And we saw Toby fail to make a firm stand on the issue with Delphine, which of course came back to really haunt him. But the two major shocks in there don’t have much to do with a direct Dolphyne, yet they’re huge.
The lovable Akinyi makes her way into the series and pretty much endears herself to all. She’s playful, she’s fun to be with…
And she’s got a big problem. A problem we all only find out in this episode.
Who would have thought the issue was worse than we expected? Irritable bowel syndrome is bad enough, but the absolute shock of discovering she had colon cancer? That left us absolutely befuddled.
But yeah, that’s major shock number 2. Number one is undisputed.
The bloody end to the hateful man called Emmanuel Adamtey.
Nobody saw it coming, but nobody was mad about it. Initially coming across as a belligerent politician, he becomes a despicable character we can’t stand. And what makes it worse, once his eyes fall upon the Dolphyne matriarch, he makes her his next target. Up until the end, you’re wondering if he’ll actually get through to Larissa, and how that’s gonna play out.
In the end, though, you need not wonder anymore. A metal baseball bat and a deeply wounded Aniyah ensure that her abuser, and one character that’s definitely making the State’s Hall of Shame list, is brutally quenched.
Like I said, nobody saw it coming. But nobody shed a tear for the evil bastard. He deserved it.
Yes, so that’s the list I could come up with for today. No doubt about it, the next list is gonna be a lot more different!!
